Electromagnetic radiation could contribute to insect demise

reprinted from Courthouse News Service BERLIN (AFP) — Radiation from mobile phones could have contributed to the dramatic decline in insect populations seen in much of Europe in recent years, a German study showed Thursday.

On top of pesticides and habitat loss, increased exposure to electromagnetic radiation is “probably having a negative impact on the insect world,” according to the study presented in Stuttgart, which is yet to be peer reviewed.

The analysis of 190 scientific studies was carried out by Germany’s Nature and Biodiversity Conservation Union (NABU) together with two NGOs, one from Germany and one from Luxembourg.

Of the 83 studies deemed scientifically relevant, 72 showed that radiation had a negative effect on bees, wasps and flies.

These effects ranged from a reduced ability to navigate due to the disturbance of magnetic fields to damage to genetic material and larvae.

Mobile phone and Wi-Fi radiation in particular opens the calcium channels in certain cells, meaning they absorb more calcium ions.

This can trigger a biochemical chain reaction in insects, the study said, disrupting circadian rhythms and the immune system.

“The study shows that we must keep our eyes open in all directions when analyzing the causes of the dramatic insect decline,” said Johannes Enssle, head of NABU in the state of Baden-Wuerttemberg.

“The subject is uncomfortable for many of us because it interferes with our daily habits and there are powerful economic interests behind mobile communication technology,” Enssle said.

Peter Hensinger of the German consumer protection organization Diagnose Funk said closer attention must be paid to the possible negative effects of radiation on both animals and humans, particularly with regard to the introduction of 5G technology.

Networks equipped with 5G are expected to offer speeds 100 times faster than existing 4G networks, but the technology has been met with strong opposition from some quarters, especially among environmental campaigners.

What’s wrong with 5G and telecom hype?

First, the telecom companies have been charging you different fees on your phone/telecom bill for years with the reasoning that they will use these funds to expand fiberoptic systems to reach more remote areas. Because of this they have amassed funds from customers that have not been used because they haven’t done this expansion. Now they are going to use the funds to expand 5G without your consent and using the funds that you paid into for a completely different purpose. Throughout the world telecom companies have disclaimers and warnings on wireless devices (see chart below) and have restricted frequency levels that have proven to cause harm. Even warnings from telecom companies to their shareholders have indicate that they cannot be insured for suits brought from people being harmed by these frequencies. Several telecom company executives in other countries have resigned rather than be personally liable in such a lawsuit. Do the insurers know the risks that we are not privy to?

So what’s wrong with 5G besides the fact that the infrastructure will have to be overwhelming because these frequencies are short range and therefore require hundreds or thousands or units on poles and structures vs. one cell tower?  These units will also require higher usage of electricity putting our grid system in overload. The 5G hazard is just an upgrade from the hazards we are already receiving from 3G and 4G through our cell phones, WiFi, smart meters and smart houses. The 5G frequencies were actually developed years ago as a weapon to induce pain, although if used sparingly it can actually treat chronic pain. Did you know the airports scanners are a form of 5G and are used to detect explosives?

The big hazard to the body is that the frequencies from 5G are absorbed through our skin and eyes and detrimentally effect our cells. Our sweat glands resonate with these frequencies creating dis-ease in the body. 5G affects cell growth repair so if the person is older or has some sort of immune-compromised illness they will likely be more affected*. The frequencies also disrupt the body’s ability to maintain antioxidant and glutathione levels when they are within 80 meters of the 5G unit, and also alter cell membranes, changes gene expressions and alter our cell death cycle and bacteria growth.

Japan, the USA and Canada have the highest allowable levels of RF exposure in the world. What do the other countries know that we aren’t being told? According to the Environmental Health Trust publication 5G uses frequencies from low to high band currently sub 6GHz. These have proven to cause cancer, but other risks to our health can include DNA , brain/memory, and sperm/reproductive damage, not to mention the extreme environmental risks to insects and trees.  5G is poised to be the undoing of personal freedoms, human biological sustenance, and the health of the planet. With 5G being launched agressively without need for local zoning approval during the pandemic, we all need to take our heads out of the sand and take a stand against this Orwellian technology.

Thank you to everyone who wrote bills, sent in testimony, called in support, or simply sent good energy our way — it is working and we just cleared several hurdles!

Joint Committee on Consumer Protection

  • Reported out favorably: Senator Julian Cyr’s S. 129 to form a commission to investigate the health and economic impact of wireless radiation.

Joint Committee on Telecommunications, Utilities and Energy

  • Reported out favorably: Senator Michael Moore’s S. 1988 right-to-choose non-radiation-emitting utility meters.

Joint Committee on Economic Development and Emerging Technologies

  • Filed a May 4 extension for H. 383 so they have time to investigate. We presented the facts on 5G and have their attention.

Other Committees

  • We suspect the remaining bills have been sent to study, which means they could be revisited until July 31st, or not.
  • I will post updates as they are confirmed at Understanding EMFs.

 

What Happens Next?

Advancing bills will need to go to the House and Senate for approval, then to the Governor’s desk to be enacted before the end of the year.

New Hampshire and Oregon have acted swiftly, so we remain hopeful Massachusetts will be next!

We await the Senate Clerk’s assignment to the next committee and will be in touch with quick action items once we know more.

Smart Meter Hearing Update

Thanks so much to those who sent in testimony for the three Massachusetts utility smart meter bills!

(If you haven’t had a chance, there’s still time and every voice counts — here’s the template to make it easy.)

Yesterday nine constituents testified before the Joint Committee on Telecommunications, Utilities and Energy. We hope to have video to share soon.

Some highlights:

  • The legislators heard personal experiences, the science, and what other states and countries are already doing to protect their citizens.
  • They also heard details on National Grid’s fraudulent smart grid pilot program in Worcester, MA.
  • Senate Chair Michael Barrett stopped to ask good questions about the science.
  • We laid out solutions and handed both the House and Senate Chairs the roadmap to safe, sustainable technology: the policy book Reinventing Wires: The Future of Landlines and Networks.
  • Industry representatives were in the hearing chamber so we got to educate them too; they chose not to testify.

We are so grateful for the tireless work of our world scientists, health care professionals, educators, advocates — and a growing number of public servants tuning into the wireless radiation issue. We know it is on your shoulders we stand as we work together to move the needle toward safe technology.

The public policy process in Massachusetts is a long one — this session goes until December 2020 but perhaps our legislators will move more swiftly now that New Hampshire and Oregon have passed wireless radiation bills into law.

We just found out the Massachusetts Joint Committee on Consumer Protection and Professional Licensure has scheduled two more of our bills for public hearing:

Senator Julian Cyr’s S. 129 and S. 130 seek, respectively, to:

  • Form a special commission to research the impact of electromagnetic (EMR) and radiofrequency (RFR) radiation on consumer protection, public health, and technology
  • Emulate the Berkeley, CA ordinance to notify the public of the fine print radiation warnings

I’ll create a template soon and ask for testimonies to be sent in again. If folks can make arrangements to testify in person too, these are perhaps our two strongest bills this session.

Italy links cell phone use to cancer

On 30 January, 2019, an Italian Court in the city of Monza, Italy ruled that the Acoustic Neuroma brain tumor of an airport employee was caused by exposure to the radiation from a cell phone he used for over 10 years for his work. The court determined that the tumor has permanently incapacitated him, and ruled it to be an occupational disease. PRESS HERE for the Court’s Decision.

This is the fourth case in which the courts in Italy determined that an Acoustic Neuroma type brain tumor was caused by a cell phone, and the fifth court to make such ruling as in the first case the court decision was appealed and later confirmed by Italy’s Supreme Court.

Moratorium – Geneva stops construction of 5G antennas

The Geneva Switzerland Cantonal Parliament has submitted a motion on Wednesday evening for a moratorium on 5G antennas in the cantonal area. The motion requires independent scientific evidence of any damage to health prior to the moratorium being lifted.

In Geneva’s Grand Council it was said that many mobile operators would explain to consumers that 5G was the same as 4G. However, the environment is increasingly burdened by electromagnetic waves and nobody knows about the health effects. The canton parliament also wants to know about the effects on animals.

With 58 to 28 votes, the council referred the motion to the government, which is now to turn to the World Health Organization for independent research.

If you love bees and trees – hate 5G!

This is important for you to be aware of. Utilities are putting up 5G radiofrequency units on poles throughout the world and even President Trump wants to see it rolled out all over the USA. While you may think this will help your connectivity, it has been shown not to be that beneficial over 4G and there are numerous safer alternatives to supply service in remote areas. We don’t need an ugly group of hundred-pound units on the top of every so many poles on our street. Plus the radio-frequencies have proven to have a negative effect on not only our health but the health of nearby trees, birds and bees.

Currently, 5G technology is effective only over short distances and doesn’t penetrate through solids—requiring numerous antennae with unobstructed paths between transmitters and receivers. Wireless antennas emit microwaves – non-ionizing radiofrequency radiation – and essentially function as cell towers. Each installation can have over a thousand antennas that are transmitting simultaneously. They increase electromagnetic radiation near homes. Property values drop after a cell tower is built near homes and this ugly units will do nothing for curb appeal. Health effects to people and animals include:

  • Increased Wireless Exposure– Since this new standard will require extensive towers, Users will be subjected to more cell tower radiation as it will be nearly impossible to escape wireless radiation as more wireless-enabled devices will appear on the market.
  • Increased Number of Electromagnetic-Sensitivity (ES) Cases – ES is the condition in which people develop intolerances to radiation from wireless technology devices such as cell phones, cell towers, Wi-Fi, smart meters and antennas. Symptoms range from tingling and headaches to sleep disturbances, nausea and memory problems.   • Negative Environmental Impacts– Wildlife is expected to be affected by the introduction of widespread 5G. It is theorized that the navigation of birds and insects (especially bees) will be disrupted and more research is required to explore the exact repercussions of Wi-Fi radiation on our environmental surrounding. According to a study by Wageningen University in the Netherlands, radio frequency signals could very well be responsible for the diseased trees, which exhibited bark tears, bleeding and leaves prematurely dying. Trees with closest proximity to Wi-Fi networks suffered from telltale indicators of radiation sickness, including a “lead-like shine” on their leaves, which is caused by the deterioration of outer-cell layers — leading to premature death of the foliage.

We believe the responsible course of action is to defer 5G deployment until the full biological and environmental effects are understood. To protect our health, more research must be undertaken. Additionally, there should always be an option to opt-out from 5G technology from devices like appliances and cars—ensuring the safety of those with electromagnetic-sensitivities, the elderly and the young. – the AntiAgingLady

.During the recent years over 240 scientists from more than 40 countries have expressed their “serious concerns” , via EMF Scientists Appeal, regarding the ubiquitous and increasing exposure to EMF generated by electric and wireless devices – already before the additional 5G roll-out. The over 240 scientists refer to the fact that ”numerous recent scientific publications have shown that EMF affects living organisms at levels well below most international and national guidelines”. Effects include increased cancer risk, cellular stress, increase in harmful free radicals, genetic damages, structural and functional changes of the reproductive system, learning and memory deficits, neurological disorders, and negative impacts on general well-being in humans. Damage goes well beyond the human race, as there is growing evidence of harmful effects to both plants and animals.As of March 31 2019, 229 scientists and medical doctors have signed the appeal. French gov’t wants to ban smart phones in middle school

CELLPHONES SCHOOLS: Addictive, obtrusive and anti-social: why are we still allowing mobile phones in schools?

The French government, like more than a dozen countries, has legislated to ban all students under the age of 15 from using smart phones in school.

Furthermore, in Switzerland, Italy, France, Austria, Luxembourg, Bulgaria, Poland, Hungary, Israel, Russia and China   banning or restricting Wi-Fi use in schools, recognizing the deleterious non-thermal effects from electromagnetic radiation.

Apart from protecting children from physical harm, the French Education Minister Jean-Michel Blanquer told News.com the move was designed to limit distractions and cyberbullying, as well as encouraging children to socialize

German review on dangers of WiFi

From: The English translation of the review “Biological and pathological effects of 2.45 GHz radiation on cells, fertility, brain, and behavior” by Isabel Wilke, published as a supplement in the German journal ‘umwelt-medizin-gesellschaft 1/2018’. It is the largest systematic review on WiFi up to now. It documents more than 100 studies confirming harmful effects of the 2.45 GHz carrier frequency and its pulsed WiFi variant.  The review was commissioned by diagnose:funk. This review is particularly explosive, as WiFi is to be installed everywhere, including for “digital education” in kindergartens and schools. The work of I. Wilke confirms the results of the review of Naziroglu/Akman, which was published in the Springer Reference in the year 2014 and the new Review of M. Pall (2018).

In the summary of the review by I. Wilke it says: “Current exposure limits and SAR values do not protect from health risks associated with Wi-Fi radiation. The adverse effects on learning, attention, and behavior serve as a basis for educational institutions of all age groups to forgo the use of Wi-Fi applications. Due to cytotoxic effects, Wi-Fi technologies are not suitable for hospitals and telemedicine. Wi-Fi technologies should not be used in bedrooms, work spaces, common lounges, hospital rooms, lecture halls, classrooms, and public transport. The possible risks associated with Wi-Fi radiation could be avoided by testing alternative technologies at other frequency bands like optical VLC/Li-Fi technologies (visible light communication). When Wi-Fi cannot be avoided as a transition solution, the ALARA principle must be applied: no continuous transmission, instead Wi-Fi networks that can be turned off and feature dynamic power management.”

 

Due to the study situation, the Cypriot and Austrian medical associations are calling for WLAN in a joint appeal:  “Decision makers especially in Education and the Health Sector need to be aware of risks and safe alternatives of the Technology, must consider adequately Health concerns, children’s vulnerability and support safe environment in schools, day-care and paediatric units. They must promote age related rational application of digital technology and not allow at schools, particular at preschool, kindergarten and elementary schools wireless networks and opt for wired connections.”

New film on wireless radiation

RT America released the film Wi-Fi Refugees today and it is being viewed by millions all over the world on their live stream. It is a 52-minute documentary on what wireless radiation is, what it does to our bodies and our planet, and what life is like for the increasing number of citizens becoming ill from it. Several Massachusetts residents are interviewed in the film:

  • The clown, Jonathan Mirin, and his wife, Godlieve Richard who portrays the physician in their play Innocenzo, are from Shelburne, MA.
  • Ida Paredo is from Hopkinton and she shares what happened to her health after seven “smart” meters were installed on her condo wall.
  • Patricia Burke is from Millis and we see her helping Pamela Steinberg from Worcester measure the EMFs in her home, and learn how Pam has to protect herself from wireless signals coming from outside her home.
  • Patricia also joins me at Ashland High School where we measure the radiation from wi-fi systems which students and staff are exposed to daily in schools throughout the Commonwealth. We also discuss how other countries protect their citizens but in America the FCC is pushing more wireless into our society with 5G, even though the current U.S. National Toxicology Program study shows it causes DNA damage, brain and heart tumors.

Technology is here to stay, so the message is not “no technology” but rather “safe technology”. This can be achieved through hard-wired Ethernet/fiber optic connections, by keeping mobile devices primarily in airplane mode, moving wireless infrastructure away from homes/schools/medical facilities, and encouraging industry to bring biologically safe mobile technology to market before we install any new infrastructure.

 

Massachusetts is to be commended for leading the nation with seven bills to begin examining the health impact of wireless radiation. Hopefully we can be the catalyst to help our nation turn the tide on this invisible ubiquitous toxin. Please include this submission as testimony for:

Maryland raising warning on school Wi-Fi

The Maryland Children’s Environmental Health and Protection Advisory Council (CEHPAC) issued an eleven-page report December 13, 2016 titled “Wifi Radiation in Schools in Maryland Final Report,” which every school district in the country, if not around the globe, needs to read and implement.

On page 5 of that report, we find “What exposures are linked to WiFi technology?” Here’s what’s said:

“WiFi radiation” (WiFi), also referred to as radiofrequency radiation (RFR), is non-ionizing radiation typically in the microwave frequencies of approximately 900 megahertz (million cycles/second, or MHz) to approximately 5 gigahertz (1,000 million cycles per second, or GHz).

WiFi is used primarily for cellular telephones, local area networks (LANs), and other communications technologies. The primary bands used for WiFi are generally 2.4 GHz and 5GHz. [CJF: Which is similar to an operating microwave oven’s range of 2.4 GHz or above!]

WiFi radiation exposures are regulated by several agencies. The U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) issues radiation exposure guidelines as specific absorption rates (SARs) for fixed antennas, hand-held cellular telephones, and personal communications services (PCS) devices. 1 These guidelines were last issued by the FCC in 1996. The U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has established occupational exposure limits for microwave radiation. 2 The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) does not have standards for cellular telephones, but can take regulatory action if these devices are shown to have adverse health impacts. 3

Microwave technology researchers Martha R Herbert, PhD, MD, Harvard Medical School and other affiliations; David O Carpenter, MD, Director, Institute for Health and the Environment, University of Albany; Karolinska Institute associate professor Department of Neuroscience Olle Johannson and other respected independent-of-microwave-technology-funding researchers’ work have been consolidated into a 97-page anthology of sorts regarding EMF and RFR and their physiological effects, which can be read here.

Maryland state, education and children’s welfare officials obviously have come to the conclusion that parents have the right to know if there is an environmental hazard in the classrooms their children occupy for up to six hours a day. Currently, 20 countries around the world have taken steps to protect children from EMF and RFR microwave radiation in the form of WiFi technology in classrooms.

The upshot of the above CEHPAC report, parental and community involvement is the Report’s recommending the Maryland Department of Education (DoE) recommend to local school districts to reduce classroom wireless radiation exposures by switching over to and providing WIRED Internet connections.

Sweden recognizes EHS

Dr Yael Stein, MD, Department of Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine, Hebrew University – Hadassah Medical Center, Jerusalem, Israel, gave an 83 slide presentation titled “Environmental Refugees” wherein Dr Stein pointed out key factors that need to be addressed in the modern age of microwave technology that super saturates humans with EMFs and RFs from cell phones and towers, Wi-Fi, utility companies’ AMI smart meters, smart phones, routers, monitors, etc. and other electronics that can send and receive data, information, voice, photographs, etc.

Dr Stein’s comprehensive presentation was before the UNESCO 10th World Conference on Bioethics, Medical Ethics and Health Law held January 6 to 8, 2015 in Jerusalem, Israel. [1]

One very prominent classification regarding EHS, pointed out by Dr Stein, is that in Sweden, electromagnetic hypersensitivity (EHS) officially is recognized as a functional impairment and not regarded as a disease! Furthermore, there’s a published peer-review paper, “Electrohypersensitivity: state-of-the-art of a functional impairment” [2] wherein Sweden’s position on EHS is discussed. The Abstract for that paper states:

EHS is characterized by a variety of non-specific symptoms that differ from individual to individual. The symptoms are certainly real and can vary widely in their severity. Whatever the cause, EHS can be a disabling problem for the affected individual.

New MA Bill to warn about children and cell phones

Chapter 93 of the General Laws is hereby amended by inserting after section 114 the following new section:-

Section 115. All mobile telephones sold or leased at a point of sale or retail establishment in the commonwealth shall clearly and conspicuously disclose, on product packaging, the following notice to consumers:-

“To assure safety, the Federal Government requires that cell phones meet radio frequency (RF) exposure guidelines. If you carry or use your phone in a pocket or the phone is otherwise in contact with your body when the phone is on and connected to a wireless network, you may exceed the federal guidelines for exposure to RF radiation. Refer to the instructions in your phone or user manual for information about how to use your phone safely.”

Electrosensitivity recognized as a disability by the Access Board

The Architectural and Transportation Barriers Compliance Board (Access Board) is the Federal agency devoted to the accessibility for people with disabilities.

As stated in the Background for its Final Rule Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) Accessibility Guidelines for Buildings and Facilities; Recreation Facilities that was published in September 2002: “The Board recognizes that multiple chemical sensitivities and electromagnetic sensitivities may be considered disabilities under the ADA if they so severely impair the neurological, respiratory or other functions of an individual that it substantially limits one or more of the individual’s major life activities. The Board plans to closely examine the needs of this population, and undertake activities that address accessibility issues for these individuals”.

Following its recognition of electro sensitivity and its declaration of commitment to attend to the needs of the electromagnetic sensitive, the Access Board contracted the National Institute of Building Sciences (NIBS) to examine how to accommodate the needs of the electro sensitive in federally funded buildings.

For people who are electromagnetically sensitive, the presence of cell phones and towers, portable telephones, computers, fluorescent lighting, unshielded transformers and wiring, battery re-chargers, wireless devices, security and scanning equipment, microwave ovens, electric ranges and numerous other electrical appliances can make a building inaccessible.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) notes that scientific studies have raised questions about the possible health effects of EMF’s.

NIOSH recommends the following measures for those wanting to reduce EMF exposure – informing workers and employers about possible hazards of magnetic fields, increasing workers’ distance from EMF sources, using low-EMF designs wherever possible (e.g., for layout of office power supplies), and reducing EMF exposure times.
